The problem
Editorial content drove most of the traffic but lived in a separate site, so buying journeys crossed two domains. Three regions needed different catalogues and content without three separate builds.
The system
A single Hydrogen storefront reads products from the Storefront API and editorial from the CMS, with market resolution at the edge. Checkout stays on Shopify, so the decoupled surface ends where the risk begins.
The implementation
- 01Assessed whether headless was warranted before committing to it
- 02Built the Hydrogen storefront with an edge caching strategy per route
- 03Modelled editorial content and merchandising in the CMS
- 04Configured Shopify Markets for regional catalogues and pricing
- 05Enforced a bundle and Web Vitals budget in continuous integration
The result
- Domains in the buying journey
- Two to one
- Regional storefronts
- Three, one codebase
- Checkout
- Stays native to Shopify
Key learnings
- 01Assess whether headless is warranted before committing to it
- 02Keep checkout on Shopify so the decoupled surface stays small
- 03Market resolution at the edge removes three separate builds
