The problem
A paid theme carried three years of patches. Campaign pages took a week of developer time each, and the product template had accumulated four apps that each injected their own script into every page.
The system
A custom theme designed as a section library, with schemas documented so merchandisers compose pages themselves. App scripts were audited, two were replaced with theme code, and a performance budget was added to the deploy pipeline.
The implementation
- 01Audited the existing theme and app stack, attributing page weight per app
- 02Modelled campaign and editorial content as metaobjects
- 03Built a documented section and block library on Online Store 2.0
- 04Replaced two apps with native theme functionality
- 05Added a Core Web Vitals budget enforced on every deploy
The result
- Campaign page build time
- Days to hours
- Third-party scripts
- Reduced by half
- Developer tickets per campaign
- Near zero
Key learnings
- 01Schema documentation is the deliverable merchandisers actually use
- 02Two apps replaced with theme code paid for the audit on their own
- 03A budget in the deploy pipeline outlasts any one-off optimisation
